| Bird Cages
When purchasing a birdcage for your bird, you should keep several things in mind: the type of paint and metal used in the construction of the cage, the sturdiness of the cage, the dishes used, and more. Always check for sharp edges and the construction of locks, grills and trays as well.
A birdcage, no matter what kind of bird you have, should be non-toxic. Ask the manufacturer what kind of paint or powder coating they've used to finish the cage. Do not purchase cages coated with lead or zinc, as they are potentially poisonous for your bird. Stainless steel cages are unfinished and ideal, but are also more costly.
It is also important to check the welds. Some cages, although not coated with toxic materials, are welded at the joints with lead or zinc based solder or coating and can rust more easily. Further, make sure that your bird's cage is set upon sturdy wheels with ball bearing casters, not plastic wheels if you can afford it. Dishes in the cage should be made of non-absorbent materials like stainless steel. Absorbent materials like plastic and ceramic can absorb food product and change color over time. Grills should be evenly spaced and trays should slide out for easy cleaning.
